The foundations of museum work were laid by the members of the Nicopolis ad Nestum History Society at the Prosveta Cultural Club in 1947.

The museum has been situated in its present building since 1979. It is a house built in 1877 by Bulgarian master builders in Bulgarian Baroque style. It has characteristic fretwork ceilings and doors made by local master woodcarvers, descendants of the Debar school of woodcarving. The house is a cultural and architectural monument of national importance.

The museum is a regional centre for research, storage and preservation of the cultural and historical heritage of the town and the Gotse Delchev, Hadzhidimovo, Garmen and Satovcha municipalities.

The Historical Museum has 12 exhibition halls, a lapidarium and a yard.

The arcaeological exhibition presents a Thracian chariot, Thracian ceramics, a numismatic collection, marble statues and fragments of the Roman city Nicopolis ad Nestum - C. 2 (an archaeological reserve at a 7-km distance from the town of Gotse Delchev).

The ethnographical exhibition acquaints the visitors with the lifestyle of the population of the town and the region. 16 traditional Sunday-best costumes from the region are exhibited. Tools, ritual fabrics, embroideries, jewellery and musical instruments are also exhibited. The exhibition present the products of the traditional crafts such as:

bell-making,

weaving,
